One of the oldest buildings in the village is The Elephant and Castle pub, built as a house in the mid 1600s and converted to a pub by John Fuller around 1707. Until the First World War, there were six farms and several smallholdings as well as the associated trades. There were shoemakers, a blacksmith, hurdlemaker, thatcher, builder and carpenter/wheelwright, who was also the undertaker. The windmill, whose base still stands, was busy grinding corn. The number of farms has now dwindled to three, and there is one smallholding. Most people now work outside the village.
Eyke sits on the edge of historic Rendlesham Forest, which covers approximately 1500 hectares and is located in Suffolk's coastal heathland belt known as the Sandlings. The forest consists of large areas of coniferous plantations as well as broadleaved belts, heathland and wetland areas.
Not only a beautiful, peaceful place to live, it was also the site of a notorious UFO sighting in 1980, about which many conspiracy theories abound. For more on that visit www.rendlesham-incident.co.uk
About 15 minutes from the coast and popular tourist destinations such as Aldeburgh, Snape and Orford, the nearest town is Woodbridge.
