A report of November 1954, when the village school had 27 children, whose ages ranged from five to thirteen, states "The oldest part of the building dates back to 1857 but much has been done of late to improve the appearance and amenities of the school. In particular, new flush lavatories have been built and the old ones converted into useful stores; a small hard-surfaced playground has been laid; wash basins installed in the cloakrooms; the building redecorated.

The teachers and children enhance the improvement in the appearance of the interior by effective flower arrangements and by re-painting furniture, and the value of the new washing facilities by the provision of individual towels."

The report goes on about the failure of the upkeep of the garden because of the loss of a number of older children to the new "All age school" some five miles distant; presumably in Butley. While reading and arithmetic were considered to be important much mention is made of areas of education of a practical nature and one does wonder if this is something which is lost today.

Have you had a look at the Census data??? >>
