REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

Should a reason need to be divined for living firstly in the country, and secondly in a small village, positive proof was discovered a few days before Christmas. Thanks to some lovely thieves who decided to break my car window and steal my gym bag, I had a large bill for replacing the glass. But all was not lost. Thanks go out to John at the pub who as gently as he could rang at half six in the morning and told me the festive tidings - thus meaning I could cover the seats and hold back the rain, plus get on with the tedious job of getting stuff sorted out.

Only an hour or so later I was busy cancelling gym cards and trying to find someone with the right kind of glass, but another villager arrives at the door with the nicked bag in tow. Complete with wet towel and cossie! Many thanks Eyke - a job well done.... KB

Sunshine Club Christmas Party

As Mervyn says in his piece, the party this year took place on the 10th December when some 52 members and their guests sat down to a buffet meal. This was a change from the turkey roast that has been served up in previous years as it is felt that it will prove to be a format which the club can handle themselves in future years.

On behalf of Gerry I would like to say that we have enjoyed being involved with these parties for many years but feel that it is time that we stepped back. We will, of course, be only too pleased to be in the background and help where necessary.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Following the success of last year’s Christmas Tree Festival, 16 decorated trees of various themes adorned All Saints Church over the weekend of 2nd – 4th December. This year’s chosen charity was the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the contributions made by those who started their Christmas Tree Trail in Eyke totalled £120, to be spilt 50/50 between All Saints Church and the CF Trust. In addition a further £121.30 was raised through voluntary donations, making Eyke’s total contribution to the CF Trust £181.30; a superb effort.

Many people commented on how attractive the Church looked, the combination of the hard work which had gone into the Christmas Trees and not forgetting the wonderful window sills and porch displays, the creative work of Mary Cranmer, which even got a vote as somebody’s favourite!

The favourite tree and with the most votes was by Mrs Everitt, ‘For Katie’s Boys’. Second was the Fleming Family’s ‘Bonfire Night’ and third was Yvonne Fisk and Harriet Gilmore’s ‘The Recycled Tree’.

Many thanks to all those who gave their time to decorate not only a tree but also the church. Thanks to Swann’s Nursery for donating the outside tree and to the Stewards and those of you who came along to support such a worthy cause.

Jean Magennis

I would like to add my thanks to Jean for organising the All Saints wing of the Festival. To persuade sixteen groups or individuals to commit to this enterprise is no mean feat and then to raise so much for such a worthy cause is a great achievement. Jean is too modest to boast the fact that anyone who visited all the churches in the cluster will agree that Eyke’s contribution shone out like a beacon.
Almost certainly this will become an annual event so start thinking about contributing next year.

Poppy Appeal

I would very much like to say a big thank you to the friends who sold poppies this year. I was able to send the grand amount of £475.43 to the Poppy Fund which is the most I’ve ever been able to send since I’ve been doing the job. Of the total the sum of £109.20 was collected at the service in Eyke church on Sunday 20th November. Many thanks to everyone who donated.

NOVEMBER 2011

Suffolk County Council

You may be aware that Suffolk County Council launched its budget consultation on 12 August which runs until 12 December.

The council is already looking at how it can save money through staffing re-structures and reducing back office costs.  We will continue to look for further savings in these areas, but this may not be enough given the scale of savings needed.  To help us meet the challenge, we want to hear your views on the services which matter most to you.  We would also like to hear about your ideas and suggestions on how the council could save money.

Please visit our website at: http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/WeAreListening and fill in our survey.  Copies are also available through libraries or you can answer the survey questions over the phone on 0845 6031842 (Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5pm)

Village Fete

For only the second time in the thirty odd years, that I have been involved with the fete, the decision was taken to hold it in the village hall. The weather leading up to it had been dreadful and the putting up of marquees would have been very difficult. I know that the Brigginshaws, who very kindly let us have the use of their wonderful garden, were disappointed and hope that they let us return next year when, hopefully, the weather is kinder to us!!
While the figures are down on previous years a good number of people turned out and I take this opportunity of thanking them and all the helpers who make it such a memorable day.
